Kristin & Matt Part Two {Parkville, Wedding}

July 12, 2018 · Leave a Comment

We’re back with part two of Matt & Kristin’s wedding day.  We left Parkville and headed to the city for the ceremony, but stopped at English Landing Park for portraits.

We traveled to Central Presbyterian Church of Kansas City, which is historic and huge and beautiful and laced with importance for Kristin, who is a chaplain. There was a dual aisle so Kristin and her dad walked down one side and Matt on the other.  They joined in the center and then went though a procession of high-fives by their bridal party.  Again, all the unique choices they made that curated to be a day that reflected and rejoiced with them.

The dance moves cam out!  We hung out in the basement while we waited for their luxury ride to arrive and enjoyed some moody light as they practiced for their first dance.  These two can dance.  It’s so fun to photograph swing and ballroom dancing and you could just tell these two love it!

After another quick stop – all the iconic KC stuff! We got back to the reception.  They opted for a donut tower as opposed to a traditional cake and seated their guests and themed tables and served them chicken & waffles for dinner!

They set the bar high with their first dance and their guests rose to the occasion!

Matt & Kristin, may you have a life time of dances, more (gluten free) donuts then you can imagine and just the best of adventures together! XO – Sarah & Ginger

Kristin & Matt {Parkville Wedding}

July 10, 2018 · Leave a Comment

Kristin & Matt are kind, faithful and quirky.  It was a privilege to watch them step into marriage together.  We joined them this spring for their special day in Parkville, Missouri.  Matt and his guys were jovial and so easy to hang out with.  It’s always an interesting experience to be a fly on the wall with a group of guys, all the little details, a few hilarious moments and we got them out the door for some photos.  We chose to just hang around VIP Event Space and utilize all the texture and space for our group photos time.  We always feel like low-key and easy the more amenable everyone is to the process!  It’s also funny how quickly people’s personalities can shine through – these guys were hilarious!

Kristin & her entourage of ladies showed up just as we finished with the guys.  They had a low key morning at the salon, wearing the best matching shirts we’ve seen in 10 years of photography!  Kristin was calm.  Her sister is a stylist and so she got the honor of completing her make up before donning the dress, all those special connections fill a wedding day with such importance.  Hanging with the ladies we kept asking, “where did you get that?!”  Kristin had made so many thoughtful choices about her attire in relationship to her wedding theme.  Sometimes in the planning process people deviate from their theme or don’t make enough choices to tie it together – but Kristin was very on point with her details.  LOVE the dancing shoes she scored and even more excited later when she and Matt busted out their awesome moves!

bridesmaids, matching outfits, getting ready attire

Seriously, aren’t those the cutest outfits?!

Once she was all ready to go it was first look time.  These two were so deliberate in the space they made for one another.  They opted to see each other in advance so they could exchange private personal vows -we won’t mention the quick run someone had to made to acquire said vows ;) but all is well that ends well!  It was a very touching exchange, it’s stuff like this that makes our work so special – witnessing these moments.

These ladies, like Kristin, got all dolled up in 20’s themed dresses, headgear and shoes.  We loved the variety of dresses and the cohesion she chose in the jewelry and headpieces.

Stay tuned for the rest of this day!

Deer Creek Golf Club Styled Session Overland Park, Kansas

June 27, 2018 · Leave a Comment

People sometimes wonder why vendors collaborate to do styled shoots.  Most of the time the shoots are done to highlight a specific space, set of vendors, or to showcase current trends.  When our friends at Deer Creek Golf Club redid their banquet space it was time to get some images on the books to showcase their updated room.

We have done our fair share of styled shoots but this one is hands the most cheerful color scheme we’ve ever worked with.  Alex & Ashley pulled together this vibrant look to work against their new white walls.  The new wall color was the perfect backdrop for this happy theme!

In addition to the peppy colors in the ballroom we also shot a set of photos using a more traditional green that works wonderfully in their space, both inside and out.

The Best of the Northland: Restless Spirits Styled Shoot Part 2

May 23, 2018 · Leave a Comment

North Kansas City is home to Restless Spirits Distilling Company, one of KC’s most interesting and unique spaces to host a wedding.  While we were on site helping them showcase their space we decided to make the most of it and showcase two different looks.  Earlier this week we popped in with images from the first half of the shoot, which featured a rustic chic design.  For the second look Shana Vaughn Designs, taking cue from their logo, went for something more sleek.  (Also, how awesome is that truck?)

Because the Restless Spirits Distilling Company has a bit of an industrial edge for the second part of our styled shoot collaborative Shana designed a more sleek black scheme for the venue.   The cake is the brainchild of Jennifer Leslie Cake Designs, pretty perfect for this shoot!

Vendors who made this shoot possible:

  • Venue:  Restless Spirits Distillery
  • Floral Design & Decor:  Shana Vaughn Designs
  • Cake:  Jennifer Leslie Cake Design
  • Photography:  Sarah & Ginger Photography

This space is an ideal spot for more intimate weddings. There is ample parking and is easy to navigate to.  You can bring in your caterer of choice too.  If you’re interested in checking the space out click here to contact them through their website!

The Best of the Northland: Restless Spirits Distilling Company Styled Shoot Part One

May 21, 2018 · Leave a Comment

One of the really cool parts of our job is that sometimes we just get to play with pretty things.  Last year we were asked to help Restless Spirits Distilling Company show what their space could look like if it was set for weddings or other special events.  Normally their North Kansas City space is used for distilling spirits (gin, vodka, whiskey) and tastings.  It’s an interesting space with a grand bar on one side and views into their distillery on another.  On warm days the garage door can be opened for guests to mingle inside and out.  In short, it is a space that is just begging to be used for weddings!  There is a lot of press out there about them, click here to read an interview!

The talented Shana Vaughn designed two different looks for the space.  The first was a rustic-chic theme with lanterns, pops of gold, and peach roses with greenery.  The second was a sleeker look with lots of black.  Because there is sooooo much visual yumminess I’m splitting this shoot over two days here on the blog.  Today say hello to Restless Spirits Distillery Company all decked out for a wedding or event with a rustic-chic bend.

Isn’t that bar wonderful?  We had a lot of fun dressing it up with the cake.  The cake was designed by Jennifer Leslie Cake Design (hands down the best in the Northland!)

Restless Spirits also has a side room that is perfect for small affairs.  Think business meetings, lunches, possibly even bridal showers (how cool would a co-ed shower be at a distillery?).

Romantic Tasting with Shining Stars Catering {Kansas City Wedding Planning}

May 2, 2018 · Leave a Comment

Earlier this year we got the privilege of being asked to be apart of Shining Stars Catering February tasting.  They are one of Kansas City’s premier caterers and hosts styled food tastings for all of their clients every other month.  They do their tastings at the LaRue Building, which is a newer, intimate venue in the heart of downtown.  Each time they do a different theme with different vendors.  For the February tasting it was a dark, romantic mood. It was created by beautiful flowers and decor by Shana Vaughn Designs and amazing accent lighting by Icon Event Group.  Marvin, Deb, Joanne and the rest of the Shining Stars team were a dream to work with and we can’t wait to team up with them again.

Kansas City Wedding Planning Shining Stars Catering LaRue Building Shana Vaughn Designs Sarah and Ginger Photography Icon Event Group

When the food is pretty enough that it looks like decor you know you’ve hired a winning caterer! Also, for the record, the food tastes even better than it looks.

While the guests arrived for the cocktail hour Icon Event Group set up the accent lighting and called us back in – I’m so glad they did!  These ended up being some of our collective favorites of the set up images.  It’s amazing how good lighting can elevate decor.

Shooting in this space felt a bit like coming home to me (Ginger).  Early in my wedding career I worked at The Kansas City Club, located next door, and walked by this space every day.  Sarah and I used to look in the windows of the run down building (when pieces of the ceiling were laying on the floor) and imagine it as a wedding dress shop.  Can you image beautiful gowns in the windows?  We loved getting to be apart of this event and were thrilled with being able to add these dark, romantic images to our portfolio.  Now that you’ve seen the space don’t you want to go take a look too?

This event wouldn’t have been possible without the contributions of:

  • Shining Stars Catering
  • Shana Vaughn Designs
  • Icon Event Group
  • LaRue on Baltimore

Scott & Cailin Madrid Theater Wedding Part Two {Midtown, Kansas City, MO}

March 28, 2018 · Leave a Comment

Back today for part two of Scott & Cailin’s wedding.  We headed over to the Madrid Theater for ceremony & reception time.  It’s a beautiful space.  Often couples get trapped by beautiful spaces and opting to do too many small things and miss making an impact.  We were super impressed by Cailin’s choice to do large focal florals for her ceremony (that doubled after the reception space flipped).   They added interest, color and impact without a lot of work on her part! The table designs were simple and tasteful spread with their favorite literature quotes, candles and homemade apple butter favors!

After all the nerves which melted beautifully into contented joy, everyone was ready to let the party begin!  The Madrid does such a fantastic job and accommodates wedding/ceremony combos so well!  While the staff flipped the ceremony space for dancing and dinner, the guest enjoyed drinks upstairs!  BBQ for dinner, great live music, quilt-square guest book, good friends and lots of laughter carried this event into the evening.  As we mentioned before, this wedding was particularly special for us since we grew up with Scott – so we got to enjoy the evening with lots of familiar faces!!

Congratulations Scott & Cailin!  We wish you much love and adventure.  XO – Sarah & Ginger

Scott & Cailin Madrid Theater Wedding {Midtown, Kansas City, MO}

March 26, 2018 · Leave a Comment

Scott & Cailin got married in a cool October weekend.  Their day was full of personal touches, family heirlooms, intentional choices, nods to their passions/interests and best of all, celebration.  All things, that weddings should be in our opinion!  We began the day at The 816 Hotel in the heart of Midtown where Cailin was gathered with her ladies, her mom, Scott’s mom & sisters.  Just one floor up Scott & his groomsmen were preparing.  It’s always amusing to compare the hustle and bustle with a bride with the relaxed joking and video games surrounding grooms.  It was easy to tell that both Scott & Cailin were nervous as well as excited for the day the lay ahead.

Because of the fall season and their ceremony time and Missouri – for real – they opted for a sneak peek.  We were able to duck out of the hotel with just the bride & groom and head to The Nelson Art Galley (where Cailin works!) for their first look.  The couple decided to exchange rings during this time, which we felt was a very special touch. We met up with the bridal party at a local arcade.  This felt like the perfect spot for Scott, the comic & game enthusiast!  With a few tables moved around, a few chairs to stand on ;) and some creative thinking – we were able to snag some fun images of the group as well!

We then took a trolly over toward Pilgrim Chapel and had a lot of fun with group portraits on some stairs on the side of an old building.  The weather was turning on us and getting seriously SOO cold, so we were all happy to get moving toward ceremony time!

Check back for part two at the Madrid Theater!

Jerome & Brynne Mission, Kansas Reception {Mission Hills Country Club}

January 21, 2018 · Leave a Comment

Mission Hills Country Club provided a tranquil and stunning backdrop for Brynne & Jerome’s wedding reception this fall.  After the ceremony Brynne & Jerome opted for bridal party portraits at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art and then we traveled via trolly where they arrived at Missions Hills for their bride and groom portraits.  We had a lot of fun on this windy day with the cathedral length veil.

We’re big fans of a country club weddings, and of course Mission Hills is a favorite!  Brynne & Jerome had a head table where they seated their parents and grandparents, affectionally called the Hall Lee Jelly.  It was gestures like this which really left a mark on us as we witnessed their union.

Cake and then chimes to signal dinner, followed by toasts that made us laugh and cry and raise a glass to a live being lived well, and a bright and love-filled future being anticipated!

As a final touch of perfect for this day, KC Flo.  Seriously, this live band option with incredible mash ups quickly became our new favorite way to dance at a reception!!

They wouldn’t let the evening pass without a nod to their rivalry!  Which was so fun and engaging for everyone!

Jerome & Brynne, thank you for being so fantastic, for finding each other and choosing us to document your love.  We wish you a life of gratitude and love! XO – Sarah & Ginger
