Born and raised in mid-Missouri, I graduated from William Jewell College in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Communication. In college I took a photography course as a summer elective. This was back when photography was done in the dark room, and the course seemed to be enjoyed by people interested in still life and found object photography. I seemed drawn to people. I often took my camera with me down to Freedom Fire, a ministry I volunteered with, finding the smiles of the kids and relationships between people the place where I most enjoyed photography. After college I accepted a variety of opportunities to photograph people and events as they came to me, I also did some work with an established photographer in Liberty. While working for someone wasn’t what made my heart beat, I continued to accept free-lance projects while working in ‘corporate’ America. Ginger & I ended up working together for a business in educational sales. While we both succeeded in the company, it was very quickly boring. In January 2010 we launched Sarah & Ginger Photography with the idea that we could harness our freelance skills to become our full time joint pursuit. We are now a three-time The Knot Best of Weddings award winning photography company specializing in wedding photography. I have now found the work that makes my heart beat. Let me tell you, it’s awesome to live your dream!
While still in college (2003) I began volunteering with Freedom Fire Urban Ministries. An organization, celebrating 20 years of ministry in 2017, and group of kingdom changes which feel like home to me in all the best ways. I went on to become part of their staff in 2010, serving in a variety of roles eventually leading to a key role with an initiative, Lead to Read KC from 2011 to 2016. Sarah & Ginger Photography and Freedom Fire Urban Ministries truly are extensions of me as a person, and allow me to explore creativity and engage our community in diverse ways.
I am a proud resident of Kansas City North with my husband, Jonathan our 3.5-year-old daughter, Natalie and rescued collie/shepherd mix, Kai. In my spare time I enjoy sewing, camping/exploring, thrifting and drinking lots of well-brewed black coffee.
